YMCA Day @ the Opera is a newly launched programme following our inaugural event on 17th Aug 2009 at the Kreta Ayer People’s Hall. At this event, 700 elderly poor and disadvantaged were befriended by 350 youth volunteers and treated to a 2 hr 30mins opera treat by a Hong Kong opera troupe in collaboration with the Queenstown Community Center’s Cantonese Opera Troupe. For 2010, this programme is confirmed for 20 Mar, 15 May, 18 Sep, 4 Dec in partnership with QCCOT and will be held at the YMCA Auditorium and Queenstown CC. 'YMCA Opera Treats' is an intergenerational programme that aims to provide the elderly poor with a nostalgic and entertaining opera show and engaging young volunteers to befriend and bring cheer to our beneficiaries from all Homes and Senior Activity Centres across Singapore Volunteers to assembly at 2pm for briefing at YMCA Auditorium 2.00p.m. – 2.30p.m: Befrienders register and briefing 2.30p.m. – 3:00p.m: Voluntary Welfare Organisation VWO) arrivals and ‘back stage tour’ 3.00p.m. – 3.30p.m: Guests to be seated (Distribution of goodie bags as they enter auditorium) 3.30p.m. – 4.30p.m: Start of Opera Performance 4:30pm. – 4.45p.m: Interval 4.45p.m. – 6.00p.m: Opera continues 6.00p.m. onwards: Befrienders assist beneficiaries to the buses to bid them farewell * Timing subject to changes depending on circumstances
